DESCRIPTION: Approximate length - 15 - 17mm. Approximate body length - . An eye-catching Tiger Crane-Fly with a yellow and black head, with a similarly coloured thorax that is well marked on the pleura and a yellow abdomen with a dark stripe down the middle. The wings are very characteristic with a dark patch below the stigma and darkened wing edges. BEHAVIOUR: The larvae live in the soil and feed on plant roots. DISTRIBUTION:Widespread throughout and relatively common. HABITAT: Woodlands, gardens, hedgerows and shrubberies. Has a preference to frequent shaded areas. PERIOD: May to August. |
